My mum gave me books as treats when I was young, says Nadia Mifsud. Life is all about firsts. And for an author, firsts tend to leave an imprint of memories that translate into literature.

This is the book that broke my heart and still made me love it, the one that I am recommending whole-heartedly even though reading is guaranteed to make you sad. Why would anyone want to do that, I hear you ask. The answer is simple. Finding beauty so raw that it will touch your heart is a rare thing in and of itself. When it comes in the shape of exquisitely-crafted words and a narrative that is so human and engaging… well, then it is priceless and certainly worth any amount of sadness.

Imagine: if around a hundred authors originating from all European countries were able to get together to undertake a bus tour across the continent, simultaneously overcoming the boundaries and borders that others are striving to rebuild, as well as creating a text together, then that would surely be a start. At a time when division and separatism are being preached all around us and people are starting to live in fear of one another, it becomes even more important that we come together to celebrate and uphold the freedom and solidarity that the arts can offer.
